Every season brings new roofing concerns. In the winter, we worry about snowfall putting stress on the roof, and the spring and fall bring concerns about gutter debris and rainfall. The summer, like all other seasons, brings different challenges. Here’s how to take care of your roof this summer and extend its lifespan.
1. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts
Spring is often the wettest period of the year, and summer brings its fair share of thunderstorms. This can bring debris including leaves, seeds, and branches into your gutters, which can mess with your roof’s drainage system. Schedule gutter cleaning to protect your roof from the threat of storms and other inclement weather.
2. Check Your Attic
Mold and rot can set in fast. As the weather becomes warmer and more humid, check your roof for signs of rot and other damage. One of the best ways to do this is to go up to your attic and examine the wood on the underside of your roof. If you notice any damage, no matter how small, make an appointment for a quick repair. The longer you neglect it, the quicker the problem will spread – which means more expensive repairs down the road.
3. Check the Health of Your Shingles
It’s warm outside, which means it’s the perfect time for a roof inspection. You can do this easily without going onto the roof itself – simply grab a pair of binoculars and complete a visual inspection. You’re looking for:
” Curling or buckling shingles, which might mean your roof is nearing the end of its life.
” Roof rot or mold. Keep in mind, however, that the presence of mold on shingles does not necessarily mean they’re bad – sometimes mold grows on top in response to humid conditions.
” Check your gutters and downspouts for specks of gravel or marbling – this could be a sign your asphalt shingles are disintegrating.
Summer brings new potential roofing challenges, from humid conditions to gutter clogs. By performing routine maintenance, however, you can tackle problems as they arise and extend the life of your roof.
